YEARLY INITIATIVE

A project celebrating artists, entrepreneurs
and civic leaders who shape Charlottesville.

FOURTH ANNUAL

The Founding Cville initiative celebrates the contemporary founders who are shaping the future of the City, and who inspire the next generation of  ideas and founders. A public nomination process surfaces artists, civic leaders, and entrepreneurs whose endeavors have had tremendous local, national, and even global impacts. A selection committee comprised of past recipients and the Tom Tom Advisory Board select local founders. The recipients are announced in September.

LAMPPOST BANNERS

In September, each Founder’s portrait is featured on a lamppost banner on the Downtown Mall.

COMMEMORATIVE BROCHURE

In depth profiles are published of their founding story and advice for up-and-comers.

SPEAKER GALA

Participants share ideas at a private gathering hosted by previous recipients.

TOMTOBERFEST

Founding Cville culminates with a public award ceremony at Tomtoberfest, our fall block party.

The public nominates local founders of business, artistic or civic initiatives who embody the Jeffersonian spirit of multidisciplinary creativity. Nominations open in May 2017.

WHO IS A

FOUNDER?

The public is invited to nominate a broad range of founders through an expansive and inclusive criteria of founding:

  • Have they founded or cofounded a civic, entrepreneurial or cultural initiative in Charlottesville or Albemarle?
  • Have they taken risks and displayed leadership to realize their vision?
  • Have they had positive local, national, or even global impacts?
  • Have they been a positive example and role model to aspiring founders, and communicates positive narratives about the entire community?
  • Finally, generally speaking, we focus on contemporary founders. On rare occasions we offer posthumous recognition, if the founder has passed in the past two years and this project will offer an opportunity to celebrate their life’s work
